What is Sustainability?
In the State of Oregon’s Sustainability Act (HB 3948), sustainability is defined as, "using, developing, and protecting resources in a manner that enables people to meet current needs and provides that future generations can also meet future needs, from the joint perspective of environmental, economic and community objectives." Sustainability requires an integration of economic, environmental, and community perspectives. Integrating sustainable practices positively impacts the economy, environment, and community in which we live.
Creating the Nation's Most Sustainable Capital City Through Community Partnerships
Oregon is a state leading efforts to attract sustainable industry and jobs, promote policy and programs that encourage environmental stewardship and green innovation, and maintain natural resources for recreation and quality of life. As the capital of Oregon, Salem aims to build on this reputation. Salem is home to sustainable businesses and industries like Kettle Foods, SANYO Solar, and Sequential Biofuels, and is home to Pringle Creek Community, one of the most sustainable communities in the nation.
What is the City Doing to Promote Sustainability?
