The Salem Municipal Airport (SLE) is conducting an environmental assessment (EA) with the assistance of the consultant team of Mead & Hunt, Inc, Vigil-Agrimi, Inc, and Archaeological Investigations Northwest, Inc. (AINW). to determine the potential effect of a proposed runway extension project on the natural and human environment.
A study conducted during Phase I of the Airport’s Master Plan Update found a longer runway is necessary to accommodate the current and forecasted aviation activity. Before the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) can approve the runway extension, an EA must be conducted to analyze potential impacts associated with the project.
Federally funded airport improvements constitute a Federal action and are subject to the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The FAA, as the Federal Lead Agency, and the City of Salem, as the project sponsor, are preparing this EA to evaluate the potential environmental effects of the proposed runway extension to comply with NEPA requirements. The EA will be prepared pursuant to FAA Order 1050.1E: Environmental Impacts: Policies and Procedures, and order 5050.4B: NEPA Implementing Instructions for Airport Actions.
The Environmental Assessment is available for review online at the Mead & Hunt website.
