City Council Ward 8 Vacancy

Council declares position vacant

Post Date:02/15/2022
City Councilor Jim Lewis resigned his position effective February 14, 2022.  Councilor Lewis represented Ward 8 in West Salem. Lewis, whose term expires December 31, 2022, had announced that he would not seek re-election.

At their February 14, 2022 meeting, the Salem City Council declared the position vacant.

Minimum qualifications

Those interested in filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Councilor Lewis must submit an application to the City Council, be registered to vote at an address within Ward 8 at the time of their appointment, and have lived in Ward 8 for 12 months prior to appointment.

Application process

The application process closed March 8, 2022.  The City Manager will forward all applications that meet the minimum requirements to the Council Boards and Commissions Appointments Committee for the Committee's review and recommendation to City Council.

On March 21, 2022, the City Council will hold a special meeting to interview the candidates.  On March 28, 2022, the Salem City Council may appoint a replacement.  If the appointment takes place on March 28, 2022, the person appointed could attend and participate as a Councilor at that meeting, after the appointment occurs.

Term of service

The appointment lasts until the term expires on December 31, 2022.
