Salem is updating the playground structure in Wallace Marine Park and is looking for ideas from residents on ways to improve the play structure near the soccer fields. An online survey with information about 3 new proposals for the updated park feature is available now. The survey is open until May 22, 2022 and presented in both English and Spanish languages.
The original play structure was built in 1985 and made from a combination of wood and steel pipes. The new design will feature many modern amenities selected from the online survey as well as a new accessible concrete path and ramp from the parking lot, a drinking fountain, and expanded area for a swing structure. The total cost for the project is approximately $225,000 with construction set to begin in late summer 2022.
Wallace Marine Park includes 114 acres on the west bank of the Willamette River in West Salem. The park is home to Wallace Marine Softball Complex, Salem’s premiere softball and kickball fields that host local and national tournaments. There are also 5 soccer fields of various sizes to accommodate different levels of play. The south end of the park features a boat ramp, restrooms, and a floating dock for boats, kayaks, and fishing. Walkers, runners, and bicyclists enjoy the developed and undeveloped trails circling the park with easy access from the Union Street Railroad Bridge which crosses the Willamette River from Riverfront Park and downtown Salem.
