Geer Park Master Plan Update

The Geer Park Master Plan envisions the development of new park features in the undeveloped areas of the park.

About the Park

Geer Park is a 44-acre, community park located at 241 Geer Drive NE. As a Community Park, Geer is a park where you can find active and passive activities and reservable features such as a covered shelter and ball fields. The park currently includes both developed and natural walking paths, picnic tables, two baseball fields, two soccer fields, and Salem's only bike park.

About the Master Plan Update

City Council approved the Geer Park Master Plan Update on July 16, 2021. The master plan envisions the development of the following park features:

  • Multi-use sports field: baseball, softball, and soccer
  • Skatepark (approximately 20,000 square foot)
  • Playground (approximately 10,000 square foot)
  • Splash pad (approximately 1,800 square foot)
  • Enhanced bike park
  • Single track bike trails
  • Flexible open space
  • Hard surface paths
  • Soft surface trail
  • Large dog park (approximately 1 acre)
  • Small dog park (approximately 1/4 acre)
  • Picnic shelters (4)
  • Restrooms (2)
  • Parking (40 stalls)
  • Potential locations for public art and interpretative signage

Development of the new park features will occur in phases. Construction phasing will depend on several factors, including funding. The next phase, Phase 2, will most likely include the skate park and bike park along with hard surface paths for access to those facilities. Later phases will be determined based on funding availability.

Thank you for your participation! The master plan update process was a collaborative effort between community participants, City staff, and the project consultants. Public input, site conditions, as well as opportunities to balance recreational activities with flexible open space shaped each initial master plan design option and the resulting final master plan.

The master plan update process began in the spring of 2020 with public engagement consisting of stakeholder interviews and meetings, three virtual public open houses, and three online community surveys. The initial open house and survey asked about community priorities for future park use and preferences for the layout of new park facilities. Feedback from the survey generated the framework for three design options: a recreation focused option, a flexible open space option, and a blended option balancing flexible open space and recreation.

Community review of these three options at a second open house and survey led to the development of a draft preferred option. A third and final open house provided an opportunity for community members to review and comment on the preferred option, and to give feedback on their priorities for implementing the plan. Refinements to the preferred option were made, based on public input, prior to review by the Salem Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Salem City Council.

Next Step: Skate Park Design

A design process for the Geer Park stake park is underway. The City will use the design to forecast the cost of the skate park, identify funding sources, and further plan out the project. The City may need to seek outside funding before constructing the skate park.

The skate park will be part of Phase 2 development of Geer Park, scheduled to start construction in spring 2024. Phase 1 development of Geer Park was completed in 2005.
