Minimum qualifications

  • United States citizen
  • At least 18 years old
  • High School graduate or GED Certificate
  • Current Oregon EMT paramedic certification or a paramedic student or National Registry certification to qualify for reciprocity
  • Valid driver license

Degree requirements

An Associate degree in Paramedic Technology, or equivalent, for paramedic certification on or after July 1, 1999.

Out of state applicants

​The Oregon Health Authority may grant an Oregon or provisional paramedic certification if you have a National Registry certification. The Oregon Health Authority’s website has information about these certifications.

​Lateral firefighter position requirements

Show current full-time employment by a fire department for a two years or more as a paid, career status firefighter.

  • NFPA Firefighter 1 and 2 or equivalent
  • NFPA Operations Level or equivalent
  • NWCG Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (preferred but not required)
  • Valid CPAT Card (must not be older than 6 months)

  3. Assessment and chiefs interview (all in one day)
  4. Background investigation
