On June 14, 2021, the Salem City Council will hold a public hearing as it considers the recommended budget for next year. The City of Salem's $662.6 million budget is the City's financial plan to provide services to the Salem community for Fiscal Year 2022 covers July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.
The budget was recommended by the City of Salem's Budget Committee on May 5, 2021 after four public meetings, hearing testimony, and discussing community priorities and opportunities from the American Rescue Plan Act. The Budget Committee recommendation includes simultaneous translation of future City Council meetings into American Sign Language and Spanish, a grant match for a mobile crisis response unit, and body worn cameras for public safety officers. The FY 2022 budget includes recommendations for initial uses of the City's allocation of the American Rescue Plan Act.
In the near-term, the budget presents an optimistic plan for recovery from the fiscal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding from the Federal CARES and American Rescue Plan Acts have offered an opportunity to stabilize the City budget in the short term, including the FY 2022 budget.
