Downtown Salem

The best time to visit Downtown Salem is right now! With more than 68 restaurants, independent and national retailers, a hotel, and two historic theaters, no visit to downtown is complete without shopping, dining, and entertainment. A variety of coffee shops are conveniently located as you take a walking tour of the historic district. Visit Riverfront Park and the recently completed pedestrian bridge that connects Minto-Brown Island Park and Wallace Marine Park trails.

Improvements are under way in several historic buildings, streetscape and public spaces, and new construction of an office building and residential rental units—all contributing to downtown vibrancy.

From early exclusion policies to a member of the Ku Klux Klan running for governor in the 1920s and beyond, Oregon has a troubling early history of hostility toward African-American residents. Professor Dr. Julius McGee from Portland State University will explore the policies and decisions and examine how this legacy continues to impact Oregon today. Pastor Marilyn Williams, director of the African-American Youth Leadership Conference Salem-Keizer, will introduce our speaker.

This event is a part of the monthlong 2020 Salem Reads: One Community, One Book project, focusing on the book Piecing Me Together by Renée Watson. Salem Reads ia an annual project of the Salem Public Library Foundation.
