The Salem Public Library Youth Services staff is committed to providing young children and their caregivers with early literacy resources and experience in order to foster the early literacy skills that are essential in the years before kindergarten. This includes partnerships with national, state, and local organizations dedicated to early learning development.
The Discovery Room
Children are encouraged to experience learning as play in our
Discovery Room. Since 1986, the Discovery Room has offered children from birth to age ten a place where hands-on exploration and curiosity fuel early literacy and STEM learning in a colorful engaging format, with themes that rotate quarterly throughout the year. The room is open when volunteer staff is available, so hours vary. Please call 503-588-6315 for the day's schedule.
During the seismic renovation, main branch library services will be temporarily located at 1400 Broadway NE. Although space limitations in our temporary location prevent us from offering the total Discovery Room experience, a number of items from our Discovery Room collection will be available in the Children's area for creative play by our youngest learners.
Issued quarterly, the Early Literacy newsletter offers early literacy tips, songs and fingerplays, and suggestions for great books to share with babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. If you’d like to be on the mailing list to receive future copies of the newsletter, please e-mail us.
