Since June 2020, the City has offered three COVID-19 business grants. Thus far, we have committed approximately $320,000 to more than 100 businesses and non-profits to help pay rent, payroll, inventory, and related expenses.
What funding is currently available?
$200,000 in grant funding is now available for Salem businesses needing temporary outdoor coverings and heaters to meet social distancing requirements during the winter months. Businesses must apply online between November 10 at 12 p.m. and November 17 at 5 p.m.
Grants of up to $10,000 are available to eligible businesses in Salem. Only businesses in Salem city limits will be funded. To verify whether an address is in the city limits, utilize the Salem City Limits interactive online map. Businesses must certify that federal funds were not used for the same purpose. The grant also requires that businesses have a receipt from a recent tent/heater purchase or a bid for the purchase or rental of a temporary outdoor coverings/heaters and describe how the funds will help maintain or grow their business through the winter. Grant applications open Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at 12 p.m. and closes Tuesday, November 17 at 5 p.m. If applications total more than the funding available decisions will be made via lottery. If additional funding is available after applications are reviewed, the grant application process will re-open and notifications of the re-opening will be posted on the City's social media and website.
- There are two grant categories:
- For eating and drinking establishments needing temporary outdoor tents or coverings to expand seating through winter months (up to $5,000 per grant)
- For large employers, including manufacturing businesses that have a need for temporary outdoor tents or coverings that will allow social distancing for employees at breaks/meal times (up to $10,000 per grant)
- Use of funds: grants can be used to pay for needed City permit fees, tent purchase or rental, tent poles and fasteners, as well as heaters. Payment can be issued with expense receipt (from September 1, 2020 or later) or a quote/bid for purchase/rental and an executed grant agreement with the City.
Apply for a Temporary Outdoor Covering
A City permit is required prior to placement of an outdoor patio covering. The City will waive the $12.50 processing fee when improvements are clearly designed for the sole purpose of providing temporary solutions that satisfy OHA COVID-19 guidelines
