Join the Salem Police Cadet Program

Join the Salem Police Cadet Program to serve your community while training for your future in police work. The Cadet Unit is a volunteer program sponsored by the Salem Police Department.

Cadets work alongside officers and gain valuable firsthand knowledge and insight into the profession. Cadets are introduced and trained in several law enforcement disciplines to prepare them for their duties in the field, and prepare them to interact and engage the public at community events.​

Requirements for cadets

  • At the time of application, be between the ages of 14 and 21 years
  • Enrollment and active attendance in school
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Be of good moral character with no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
  • Be physically able to perform assigned tasks and participate in rigorous duties and training

Application process

  1. ​Submit a written application telling us about yourself
  2. Take and pass a written exam
  3. Participate in the interview process
  4. Submit to a background check

Once admitted

  • Cadets have to show a continued interest in a law enforcement career
  • Attend monthly meetings and participate in ongoing cadet activities
  • Maintain a good attitude and professionalism​​​​
