Minimum requirements

To apply for a lateral police officer position, you must meet one of these requirements:

  • Possess a valid police officer basic certificate

  • Be eligible for recertification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training

  • Possess an equivalent certification and at least three years recent experience as a municipal, county, or state police officer. (Corrections, parole, and probation or military police do not fulfill this requirement. Some federal law enforcement positions may fulfill the requirement on a case-by-case basis.)

 These requirements also apply:

  • Pay negotiable based on years of experience, skills, and abilities
  • Potential for vacation and sick time to be awarded at time of hire
  • Possess good communication skills
  • High school graduate (or possess a GED certificate)
  • Written examination
  • Able to become a US citizen within 18 months of hire
  • Oral interview
  • Excellent moral character
  • Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Valid driver license
  • Minimum reading and writing skills at a 12th-grade level
  • Meet or exceed minimum physical standards
  • Demonstrate having made good life choices, as determined by an extensive, in-depth background investigation
  • Meet all applicable physical, vision, hearing, and psychological examination requirements (after conditional offer of hire)
