Minimum requirements
To apply for a lateral police officer position, you must meet one of these requirements:

Possess a valid police officer basic certificate

Be eligible for recertification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training

Possess an equivalent certification and at least three years recent experience as a municipal, county, or state police officer. (Corrections, parole, and probation or military police do not fulfill this requirement. Some federal law enforcement positions may fulfill the requirement on a case-by-case basis.)

- Possess good communication skills
- High school graduate (or possess a
GED certificate)
- Written examination
- Able to become a
US citizen within 18 months of hire
- Oral interview

- Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays
- Valid driver license
- Minimum reading and writing skills at a 12th-grade level
- Meet or exceed minimum physical standards
- Demonstrate having made good life choices, as determined by an extensive, in-depth background investigation
