Salem Public Library offers a variety of fun and educational activities for children and their adults throughout the year. Some activities require pre-registration. Check the calendar for details.​ Signup for email notification​ and never miss an event!​​

​The Great Screen-Free Challenge!

December 1 – January 20 | Children's Room

Do you have what it takes to go screen-free for a day? How about a week?

Step 1:

Pledge to turn of all screens for seven days.

Pledge to meet the Challenge! 

Registration closes January 14. 

Step 2:

Stay screen-free (not TV, gaming, movies, YouTube, etc.) for any seven days between December 1-January 20.

Step 3:

After keeping your pledge, register by January 20 at the Youth Services Ask Here Desk to attend the Kids' Late Night Party: Harry Potter Edition. Registration coming soon.  

Discovery Room

The Discovery Room offers opportunities for children to problem solve, engage in creative thinking, use their imagination, and learn while playing. The theme of the Discovery Room changes four times a year.

Please call or e-mail Youth Services, if you work with a school and daycare group, to schedule a special class visit on a Thursday or Friday morning. 

Discovery Room hours are subject to volunteer availability. Please call ahead to find out when it will be open.​

​Tinker Tech Time

3 - 5 p.m. Fridays |  Story Rooms A&B, Floor 3
Library card required
An afterschool drop-in program. Kids in grades 2 - 5 with an adult are invited to check out Tinker Tech kits every Thursday afternoon for use in the library. There are a limited number of kits available and are first-come, first reserved.

Creative Kids: Afterschool Arts Adventures

4 - 5 p.m. 3rd Thursday of the month  |  Story Rooms A&B
School aged kids from 2nd-5th grade are invited for an afterschool adventure in arts and crafts the third Thursday of each month September through March. Sign up online or at the Children's Ask Here Desk.

​Discovery Kids: Preschool Art and Science

Children ages 3-5 and their grown-ups are invited to share a story and art or science fun in this monthly program that runs from October through March. No sign-ups are necessary.

Read to a Pet

1-2:30 p.m. | Second and Last Saturday of the month | 3rd Floor Children’s Area

This program offers a relaxing, non-threatening way for young readers to improve their reading skills. Visiting dogs and cats have been trained and certified as therapy animals by Paws for Love and are mellow and friendly. This is a drop-in program, and sign-ups are not necessary.  

Family Performances

Youth Services offers periodic free high quality professional performances for families during the school year.

Monthly Lego Parties

2-3:30 p.m., 3rd Saturday of the Month |  Story Rooms Floor 3
The Legos are provided, so families only need to bring their imagination for this unstructured creative exercise for ages 4 and up.​

Summer Reading Club 

The Summer Reading Club is an incentive-based program designed to encourage kids, teens, and adults to continue reading throughout the summer. We also offer a listening club for pre-readers and their grown-ups to encourage the continued development of early literacy skills that babies, toddlers and preschoolers need in order to become readers. Registration opens online and at the library June 2018.

Visit the Library on Wednesdays to catch favorite performers and see new ones! All shows will be in Loucks Auditorium unless otherwise noted.

  • Mo Phillips (Music)
    June 21 | 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Join Mo for some singing and laughing, dancing and rockin'. Songs with our hands and bodies, songs with guitar and songs with ukulele, even songs about songs!! We'll even write a song together!

  • Leapin' Louie (Comedy)
    June 28 | 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Leapin' Louie is a master of physical comedy, trick roping, fancy whip cracking, juggling, unicycling, and more.

  • Henrik Bothe (Juggling/Comedy)
    July 5 | 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    Henrik's chaotically funny show of juggling and comedy appeals to kids and adults alike.  If you love to laugh, check out this show, as Henrik spins ropes, juggles without using his hands, and surprises the audience.

  • The Charlie Brown Show (Juggling/Comedy)
    July 12 | 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    A hilarious multi-talented performer, Charlie manipulates his props and audiences with breathtaking skill. His special blend of absurd comedy and technical feats create a memorable experience for everyone!

  • Cartooning with Barry
    July 19 | 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (Note location: Anderson Rooms A&B)
    Join Portland based cartoonist Barry Deutsch, creator of the "Hereville" graphic novel series, on a comic adventure! Barry will draw weird characters, demonstrate drawing techniques, and share tips and tricks on how comics are created from the first scribbly stickfigures to the final colors.

  • Traveling Lantern Theatre Company

    August 2 | 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
    In this interactive theatre romp, the audience will help build a ground plan while Thia Tweet the bird architect and Gerry the Ant Contractor from Brooklyn assist the Ribbles in building a new home for a better world!

  • Steve's Creature Feature

    August 9 | 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
    Prepare yourself for the ultimate reptile adventure. This interactive presentation offers a live intimate look at some of the world's most fascinating creatures, and wraps up with a reptile petting zoo and photo opportunities. Tickets will be available at the Children's Ask Here desk at 10:00 a.m the morning of the shows. Recommended for ages 5 & up.

Tuesdays are for crafts and activities this summer! Come spend your afternoons at the Library - the fun begins at 2 p.m.

  • Build It! Crafts
    June 27 | Story Rooms A & B
    Construct a fairy house, a skyscraper, a spaceship, or whatever you decide. Recycled materials will be provided. Bring your imagination and build a world!

  • Let's Move!
    July 11 | Anderson Rooms A & B
    Join Youth Services staff and volunteers for this creative movement workshop filled with juggling, dancing, hula hooping, rhythm and yoga.

  • Build a Better Lego World
    July 18 | Anderson Rooms A & B
    Invent an amazing Lego structure, then come to the microphone and present it! Legos are provided for use during the program.

  • Outdoor Art!
    August 1 | Plaza Area between the Library and City Hall.
    Jump outside into art! Be creative in the shade and sunshine! Unique art supplies provided. For ages 5 and up.

​Enjoy free family films on a big screen every Friday this summer. Shows begin at 2 pm in Loucks Auditorium. No registration is required. Doors open 15 minutes before the show.

Curiouser and curiouser! Children's Educational Theater presents: "Alice in Wonderland."  Free tickets are available in the Children's Area at 10 a.m. the day of the performance.  Tickets become invalid 10 minutes before the performance and empty seats are made available to others.

​Summer Reading Club 

The Summer Reading Club is an incentive-based program designed to encourage kids, teens, and adults to continue reading throughout the summer. We also offer a listening club for pre-readers and their grown-ups to encourage the continued development of early literacy skills that babies, toddlers and preschoolers need in order to become readers. Registration opens online and at the library beginning Tuesday, June 6. Those who complete at least 10 hours of reading are invited to enjoy an afternoon of games, prizes, food, and more at the wrap-up party on Thursday, August 17!
