Wearing masks is now required for both staff and visitors at all City of Salem locations as protection against COVID-19 transmission under Oregon Administrative Rule.
"While it feels like we are going backward, we must be mindful of the reason to once again mask up," City Manager Steve Powers told City staff." Oregon's COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are at an all-time high. Hospital beds are full and medical professionals overwhelmed. Public health data shows over 99 percent of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are among unvaccinated individuals."
The Oregon Health Authority recommends wearing a face covering or mask instead of a face shield, except in limited situations when a face shield by itself is appropriate, like talking to someone who is deaf or hard of hearing and needs to read lips to communicate.
City workers are required to wear masks while indoors, in cubicles and in plexiglass-walled stations.
