Library services to expand due to status change for Marion, Polk counties

February 26, 2021

Access and services at the Salem Public Library will increase beginning March 8 in response to recent news that Marion and Polk counties have moved to the state’s “High Risk” category. Additional appointments and hours will be available for limited, contactless Curbside Service, Operation Bookshelf deliveries will resume, and monthly Take & Make Kits will return. In addition, the library’s array of Virtual Services is available 24/7.

Proposed Changes to Floodplain Overlay Zone Code

February 25, 2021

Ordinance 1-21 proposes to amend Salem Revised Code Chapter 601 regarding floodplain overlay zones as a major step toward reducing costs for Salem citizens with flood insurance policies. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Community Rating System (CRS) program offers local communities the opportunity to reduce its flood insurance premiums by implementing measures that exceed the minimum federal standards. These code amendments are needed to improve Salem’s CRS rating and reduce flood insurance costs.

Local Non-Profit and For-Profit Developers Invited to Apply for Funding

February 11, 2021

Eligible non-profits and for-profits working to assist City of Salem residents are invited to submit proposals for approximately $2 million in City of Salem Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and an additional anticipated $400,000 from the City’s General Funds. The online application cycle opens Monday, February 8, 2021. Apply online!

Salem Reads - Everyday Biking in Salem: Now a Virtual Event!10:00 a.m.11:00 a.m.Digital Meeting

With our public library still closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, our Everyday Biking Program is going digital! The public is invited to a panel and small groups discussion covering many areas of interest in biking. Local advocates and experienced riders will give info and answer questions on a variety of topics: rules of the road, best Salem routes, commuting by bike, recreational riding, biking clubs/communities, bike mechanics/gear, riding bikes with children, and Neighborhood Greenways. After short introductions, we will use breakout rooms to allow each participant to dig into the topic/s of their choice in this flexible event.
