Join us as we begin designing the Salem Public Library seismic retrofit and renovation. Drop by the Salem Public Library on February 19 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. to participate in the Open House, share ideas about what we treasure about the Salem Public Library building and what we hope could be improved, and meet members of the design-build team. Learn more about the project on the project website.
The City of Salem is proud to be partnering with Howard S. Wright Construction and Hacker Architects, experts in library design, on the Salem Public Library renovation. This design-build team is uniquely positioned to address the unknowns of this sizeable renovation project within budget in a busy and expensive construction market, finding a structural seismic retrofit solution that doesn't adversely impact the Library space, and maintaining Library operations in a cost effective way during construction.
Can't make the Open House? An on-line and paper survey will be available before and after the Open House to gather input if you are unable to join the community conversation. And, in late April, we'll have a second Community Open House to share what we've learned and gather input on the preferred look and feel for Library spaces. Again, surveys will be available to offer input before and after the community conversation.
If you'd like to receive updates and stay involved in the design process, plans for temporary relocation, and construction, you can sign up for email updates.
In November 2017, Salem voters approved a bond that pays for upgrades to the Salem Public Library to make it safer in an earthquake, improve accessibility with the and around the exterior of the building, and make other critical improvements to include replacement of the Library shelving. These changes ensure the Library will continue to be a resource for the Salem community for decades to come.
