Salem City Council sets
wastewater, water, and stormwater service rates every two years. The Council is committed to providing adequate funding for these systems to meet the growing and changing needs of our community, and to comply with state and federal regulations. This rate proposal will fund repair and replacement of aging infrastructure such as water mains, sewer pipes, and pump stations. In reviewing a rate proposal, the Council considers what system improvements are needed and what level of rates will cover their cost.
City Council will hold a public hearing at 6:00 p.m. on October 12, 2020, before making a decision. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the public hearing will be virtual with remote attendance. Estimated rates for 2021 and 2022
The proposed rate increases are 3.0% for water, 3.0% for wastewater, and 5.0% for stormwater in January 2021 and January 2022. Individual customer charges vary due to differences in the amount of water used, the amount of impervious area on the property, and whether a backflow assembly is present. For an average single-family residence, the total combined increase each year is estimated to be between $2.15 and $3.15 per month.
