Public Computers and Internet at the Library

​​Salem Public Library has computers with access to the internet and access to databases for your use at both libraries. In addition, both libraries offer free wi-fi access for  your internet-connected device to download e-books, do research, or browse the internet. You can print from your internet-connected device to the printers in the computer center on the first floor while in the Library, or from home.

Internet computers

Internet computers require a library card or guest pass to use. You can use these computers to:

  • Write a letter or resume, design a party invitation, prepare a budget spreadsheet using  Microsoft Office 2007 Suite
  • Fill out applications and forms online
  • Use Facebook or check your e-mail with Internet Explorer 11 or  Chrome
  • Listen to and download music with iTunes and Windows Media player
  • View and edit photos and videos with Picasa or Microsoft Movie Maker
  • Play online games
  • Use our public printing service

Each time you use a Library computer you agree to our Internet Policy when you click the Accept button.

Library card holders: To use a computer present your library card at the Ask Here Desk in the Computer Center on the first floor of the Main Library, or the Ask Here Desk at the  West Salem Branch Library. Computers are available for up to 90 minutes a day. Card holders can make a future reservation up to three days in advance. Reservations are valid until 10 minutes past the reserved time, after which they are canceled automatically.  You may reserve only one computer at a time.

Out-of-area visitors with valid picture ID can get a same-day guest pass. Passes are available at the Ask Here Desk, and can be used for up to 60 minutes of computer access.

Computer locations at the Main Library

  • Public computers for use by anyone 16 and above are on the first floor of the Main Library in the Computer Center.
  • Homework, internet and game computers are available for children up to age 18 on the third floor of the Main Library.
  • Laptops are available for teens (6th grade through high school seniors) in Teen Scene on the first  floor, Teen Scene also has an Xbox, PlayStation and Wii for teen use.

Computer locations at the West Salem Branch Library

  • The computers are located next to the check-out desk.
  • Homework, internet and game computers are available for children up to age 18 in the Children's Room.


Please note: be prepared to use battery power. The libraries have limited electrical outlets. Do not plug into an outlet where you block the aisles, exits or access to materials. Do not unplug other equipment.

Everyone is welcome to use the database computers, a library card is not required. You can use database computers to:

  • Do homework
  • Research family and local history
  • Find people
  • Look up medical information
  • Learn a language
  • Locate government information and services
  • Access newspaper archives
  • Job search
  • View auto repair manuals
  • Learn about personal and business finance
  • Research legal information
  • Use our Public Printing Service

Computer locations at the Main Library

  • Anyone can use the three database computers on the second floor.
  • The database computer on the third floor is reserved for youth 18 and under.

Computer locations at the West Salem Branch Library

  • One database computer is available.
  • No age restrictions apply .
