Historic design review approval is required when exterior alterations are proposed to local historic landmarks or resources within National Register Districts.

Application Process Overview

Design review is required for the remodel and repair of historic buildings. Design review is based on either prescriptive and non-discretionary design review standards or more flexible and discretionary design review guidelines.

There are three classes of historic design review which include Class 1 minor historic design review, Class 2 minor historic design review, and Class 3 major historic design review. Class 3 major review requires a public hearing before the Historic Landmarks Commission. Review the requirements about historic design review contained in Salem Revised Code (SRC) Chapter 230.
