Apply for a Watershed Protection and Preservation Grant
Overview of the Grant
Did you know that all residents of Salem can apply for grant funding? This funding helps support local projects that protect or improve the health of local watersheds.
Watersheds are important areas of land that drain into a river and streams. They contain a variety of habitats that work together. These habitats include wetlands, forests, creeks, rivers, lakes, farms, and even towns and cities. Protecting these areas is vital for maintaining clean water and healthy ecosystems. This grant is especially important for community members who want to take action in preserving their local environment.
Public Works budgets a minimum of $50,000 each year for the Watershed Protection and Preservation Grant Program. The maximum grant awards are $10,000 for small projects and $25,000 for construction projects. A minimum match of 10 percent is required for each project type.
Examples of Acceptable Grant Proposals
Here are some examples of projects that can receive funding:
- Restoring streamside and riparian areas using tree plantings and techniques to control erosion.
- Creating environmental education programs.
- Removing barriers that block fish from swimming upstream.
- Replacing harmful invasive plants with native vegetation in riparian areas.
- Preserving watersheds by restoring and protecting green spaces and native plants.
- Conducting inventories and assessments of natural areas, including identifying harmful weeds.
- Designing, constructing, or improving stormwater management facilities, such as bioswales, eco-roofs, or permeable pavement, that serve more than a single residential property.
