Library Fees

Due Dates

When you check out items, you will receive a printed slip with the due dates. You can also check due dates by:

Fines

The Salem Public Library does not charge fines for overdue books and other items it owns.

However, fees are charged for:

  • Items not returned within 21 days of the due date (full replacement cost).
  • Items that are too damaged to be used again (full replacement cost).

If you return an item that has been marked as “lost,” the replacement fee will be removed from your account.

Library cards are blocked when lost or damaged fees exceed $50.

Paying Fees

You can pay fees for lost or damaged items at:

  • The Comprise kiosks near the Ask Here Desk on Floor 1 of the Main Library.
  • The West Salem Branch.
  • Online through SmartPay. To use SmartPay, you will need your library account number.

Lost and Damaged Items

You are responsible for all items checked out on your library card.

Damaged Items

Items should be returned in the same condition as when they were checked out. If an item is returned with major damage, you will be charged the original cost of the item plus a $5 processing fee. Examples of major damage include:

  • Water or drink damage.
  • Chewing or tearing by pets.
  • Pages or pictures cut out.

Stolen Items

If an item is stolen, check with your insurance provider to see if the cost is covered. You should also report the theft to the police.

Lost Items

An item is considered lost if it is more than 21 days overdue. The replacement cost of the item, along with a $5 processing fee, will be charged to your account.

Lost Item Refunds

If you pay for a lost item and later return it in good condition, you may be eligible for a refund of the replacement cost. The library does not accept replacements for lost items unless a librarian agrees to the exchange in advance.

If You Believe You Have Returned an Item

If an item is still on your account but you believe you returned it, email library@cityofsalem.net with the following details:

  • Cardholder name and/or library card barcode (14 digits starting with 231600).
  • Item title and barcode (14 digits starting with 336100).
  • When and where you believe you returned the item.

The library will respond as soon as possible.
