Use Your Library Card
You can borrow most items from the Salem Public Library for three weeks and renew many of them up to three times. Your library card can also be used at any library in the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library System. You can access your account online anytime of day or night to place holds, renew items, check out digital materials, and explore online resources.
Borrow Library Items
Use self-checkout machines or go to any checkout desk in the library to borrow books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and more.
Most Salem Public Library items are loaned for three weeks. The due date for each item is displayed on your checkout receipt, and online at My Account.
If you sign up for email or text notifications with a staff member or online, you will be sent a courtesy reminder two days prior to an item's due date. You are responsible for returning items on time even if you do not receive a reminder notice.
Place Library Items on Hold
If an item you want is checked out, you can place a hold on it. When the item becomes available, you will be notified by email, text, or phone, based on your account preferences.
How to Place a Hold:
- Log into your library account.
- Search for the item in the catalog.
- Click the "Place Hold" button next to the item.
- Choose a pick-up location.
Holds are stored in a public area by last name and are available for 7 days.
Renew Library Items
Items without holds will automatically renew on your account. Most items can be renewed up to three times unless someone else is waiting for them.
Always confirm updated due dates in your account.
Return Library Items
You can return items in the following ways:
- Inside either library during open hours.
- At the 24/7 drive-up book drop on Liberty Street, next to the main library.
- At any Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library System member library listed on the back of your card.
