Gain Valuable Environmental Experience

The annual summer Stream Crew internship program is important for managing Salem's local streams. The Crew walks about 60 of Salem's 90 miles of streams to find and remove trash and debris that could cause flooding. While cleaning the streams, the Crew also inspects the stream environment. They collect data on different stream features and stormwater systems, such as the locations of beaver dams, debris jams, culverts, bridges, and invasive plants. 

Learning Opportunities

In addition to stream work, the Crew gains valuable skills through educational activities. These include field tours, helping staff collect data on stormwater and drinking water quality, and completing a project to plant native plants and control invasive weeds along the stream. These experiences, combined with hands-on work, make the internship program even more rewarding.  

Making a Difference

The Crew's efforts improve the health of local streams and provide important data for managing habitats, flooding, and water quality. Their work also helps the City comply with regulations for Salem's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System permit under the Clean Water Act. Additionally, it supports the City's participation in the Federal Management Agency's Community Rating System under the National Flood Insurance Program.
