The Importance of Streams

Clean Streams Logo

Salem has over 90 miles of streams running through it. These streams add beauty to our city and provide homes for local wildlife. However, storm drains in Salem send untreated water directly to these streams. This stormwater can carry trash, car oil, and other types of pollutants straight into local streams. The City’s Clean Streams Initiative offers information and resources to help keep pollution out of stormwater and to help keep our local streams healthy and clean.

Why This Matters

It is important for everyone in Salem, especially those who live near streams, to understand how their actions can affect water quality. By learning about stormwater management, residents can help protect local streams. The Clean Streams Initiative provides valuable resources for streamside property owners and residents. These resources can help you understand how to keep local streams clean and safe. Please note that most of these resources are available only to those who live along a stream within the city limits of Salem.

Urban Streamside Program Coordinator

The Clean Streams Initiative has an Urban Streamside Program Coordinator. This person is a resource for residents and property owners living near streams in Salem. The coordinator can answer your questions about streamside areas, visit your property to assess your streamside, and provide resources to meet your needs.
