Request a Clean Water Presentation
Explore the World of Water with Your Students
Request a free presentation or field trip with our environmental outreach staff. These activities include hands-on learning and tours that highlight the important role water plays in our lives and the significance of clean water for all living things.
Why Is This Important?
Water is one of our most valuable resources. Understanding the role of water in the community helps students appreciate its importance in their daily lives. Our presentations and field trips teach students about the water cycle, water quality, and how to care for water for current and future use. Students gain knowledge and skills that empower them to protect rivers and streams and make informed decisions about the environment.

Clean Water Challenge
In this presentation, students learn how human activities affect the quality of stream and river water. Working in teams, they design, build, and test a simple water filter using everyday materials. This activity simulates how Salem filters its drinking water.
Watershed Heroes: Protecting Our Streams
Students explore human impacts on watersheds and discover solutions through the Watershed Enhancement (WE) Pledge. Using an EnviroScape watershed model, they see how pollution enters waterways and learn about solutions through the Watershed Enhancement pledge.
The Incredible Journey
This presentation teaches students about the water cycle. They simulate the water cycle by imagining water drops and tracking their movement by creating a wristband that represents a water drop's journey. An online version of this activity is available on Project WET’s Discover Water website.
The Water Equation
In this activity, students learn how little drinking water exists on Earth. Using an inflatable globe, data, and math, they estimate Earth's water coverage and calculate available freshwater. They will discuss sustainable water management, conservation strategies, and the importance of protecting water resources.
Choose a Field Trip
Field trips are available for students in grades 4-12. You can choose from the following options:
- Geren Island Drinking Water Treatment Facility in Stayton: Visit the facility where Salem's drinking water is treated and learn about the process of providing clean water to the community.
- Willow Lake Water Pollution Control Facility in Keizer: Discover how wastewater is transformed from dirty to clean water.
Note: Schools are responsible for arranging and paying for transportation to and from the field trip site.
