Coexisting with Beaver in Salem
Historical Presence of Beavers
Historically, beavers likely lived in nearly every waterbody in the greater Salem area. However, in the 1800s, beaver populations across the state and the country dropped sharply due to unregulated trapping for the fur trade. The removal of beavers significantly changed the dynamics of watersheds and contributed to the decline of stream health.
The Impact of Beaver Removal
With beaver populations almost completely wiped out in Salem, the needs, habitat preferences, and impacts of this keystone species were not considered in the city's development. As a result, the local ecosystem suffered, affecting water quality and stream health.
Beaver Populations on the Rebound
Now, beaver populations are starting to recover and move back into more urban streams. This resurgence benefits other wildlife, improves water quality, and enhances the health of urban streams. However, it also presents new challenges for stormwater management, transportation infrastructure, parks and recreation, and streamside residents and businesses.
