Overview of Lead in Water 

The City of Salem does not have any lead service lines in its water distribution system. In 2016, the City tested water samples to check for lead. Out of 89 samples collected, two samples had lead levels above the action level. However, none of the samples exceeded the action level for copper. 

Importance of Testing

Testing your water for lead is important for your health and safety. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for young children and pregnant women. By offering free lead testing, the City of Salem helps residents ensure their drinking water is safe. This service is especially valuable for families who may have older plumbing that could contain lead.  

Free Lead Testing

The City of Salem offers free lead testing for its water customers. If you are worried about lead levels in your home, you can request a free test. To do this, please call the Water Quality Hotline at 503-588-6323. 

Ongoing Monitoring

The Oregon Health Authority requires the City of Salem to follow the Lead and Copper Rule. This rule mandates that the City collect and analyze water samples from Tier 1 homes. Tier 1 homes are those built between 1983 and 1985, as they may have lead or lead-based plumbing components. 

In 2013, the City collected samples from 91 of the 147 identified Tier 1 homes. Only one home had lead levels above the action level. Because of this, the City of Salem is on a reduced monitoring plan. This plan requires the City to collect and analyze at least 50 samples from Tier 1 homes every three years.
