An emerging trend in fire services across the nation is a concept called Integrated Community Risk Reduction. This approach combines emergency operations with prevention strategies to create a more comprehensive way to reduce risks in the community.

Safety Equipment

Safety Equipment is a way to protect you and your loved ones from risk during everyday activities.

Bicycle Helmet and Smoke Alarm Program
- It is proven that these two items prevent injury. The Salem Fire Department has programs in place to provide smoke detectors and children's bike helmets to those that cannot afford them.
Life Jacket Loaner Program
- All watercraft users are strongly encouraged to wear life jackets while enjoying activities on the Willamette River. During the summer, visitors to Wallace Marine Park may borrow and use life jackets from one of two free loaner stations in the park.

Fireworks Safety
- Each year, the Salem Fire Department responds to many fireworks-related incidents. Some of these incidents have resulted in very expensive losses, including damage to vehicles and buildings. Injuries related to the use of fireworks are also a concern.
- Young ones are most at risk. National statistics indicate children and teenagers are two-and-a-half times more likely than others to suffer a fireworks-related injury.
Warning Signs of Juvenile Fire Setting Behavior
- “Children playing with matches,” “juvenile fire-setting,” and “fire starters” describe a problem that has been getting more and more attention. The United States Fire Administration reports that children set over 50 percent of all fires. In some areas, it is as high as 70 percent.
- Why do so many children light fires? More importantly, what can we do to stop them?
