Salem Suburban Rural Fire Protection District

The Salem Suburban Rural Fire Protection District covers about 30 square miles and is divided by the Willamette River. One portion of the district is located in west Salem, and the other is in South Salem.

Governance

The SSRFPD is governed by a five-member board of directors, elected by the public to serve four-year terms.

The board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Fire Training Division, 2742 25th St. SE, Salem, Oregon, 97302.

 

History of the SSRFPD

The SSRFPD was established in January 1973 when the Marion-Polk Boundary Commission merged four smaller fire districts:

  • Wallace Road
  • Eola Hills
  • South Canyon Hills
  • Rosedale-Sunnyside

All four districts had identical contracts with the City of Salem for fire protection services.


Open Burning Regulations in the SSRFPD

Residential Backyard Burning

  • Permitted between March 1 through June 15 and Oct.1 through Dec.15
  • Limited to yard debris only

 

Agricultural Burning

  • Allowed for commercial agricultural operations only
  • No written permit is required

 

Recreational and Ceremonial Fires

  • Permitted year-round
  • Only clean-burning wood products are allowed
  • Burning yard debris is not permitted
