Fireworks Safety

Fireworks are sold in Oregon each year from June 23 through July 6. During this time, you can buy state-approved fireworks from licensed retailers in Salem. You can also enjoy professional fireworks displays in the area.

Why Fireworks Safety Matters

Each year, the Salem Fire Department responds to many fireworks-related emergencies. These incidents can cause serious damage to buildings, vehicles and other property. Injuries are also a major concern, especially for children and teenagers. National statistics show that children and teens are 2.5 times more likely than others to get hurt by fireworks.

By following safety guidelines, you can protect your family, pets and property while enjoying fireworks responsibly.

The Four BEs of Fireworks Safety

The Salem Fire Department and the Oregon State Fire Marshal recommend practicing the “Four BEs” when using fireworks.

Be Prepared Before Lighting Fireworks

  • Only buy legal fireworks from licensed retailers
  • Store fireworks out of children’s reach
  • Read and follow all instructions on the fireworks label
  • Keep pets indoors, as fireworks can scare them
  • Have water ready, such as a garden hose or a bucket of water

Be Safe When Lighting Fireworks

  • Only adults should light fireworks
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children
  • Use fireworks outdoors, away from anything that could catch fire
  • Light one firework at a time and move away quickly
  • Keep children and pets at a safe distance
  • Never throw fireworks or hold them in your hand

Be Responsible After Lighting Fireworks

  • Soak used fireworks in a bucket of water
  • Dispose of used fireworks and debris safely
  • Never try to re-light a firework that did not work; wait 15-20 minutes, then soak it in water

Be Aware of Fireworks Laws

  • Use only fireworks that are legal in Oregon
  • Only use fireworks in areas where they are allowed
  • Remember, fireworks are not allowed in City or State parks

Celebrate Safely

The Salem Fire Department wants you to have a fun and safe Independence Day. By following these safety tips and using fireworks responsibly, you can help prevent fires, injuries and property damage. Remember: “Keep it Legal and Keep it Safe.”
