Salem Traffic Camera Network Update

Since November 2023, the City has experienced significant problems with our fiber-optic network due to increased demand on aging infrastructure. This network is a critical component for traffic signals, traffic cameras, and other essential communication systems.

To protect the network's integrity and facilitate troubleshooting, the City made the decision in January 2024 to deactivate much of the system, including traffic cameras.

Recognizing the importance of these systems, our Traffic Engineering team and the City’s IT department have been working together to address the underlying issues and increase the capacity of the network. These efforts have included upgrading equipment, improving system configurations, and replacing outdated infrastructure to support current and future demands. Their work has been instrumental in restoring functionality and building a more resilient and efficient communications network.

Current Status

We are pleased to report that the majority of traffic cameras are now back online, providing real-time images of roadway conditions. While this marks significant progress, some cameras are still undergoing repairs and may not yet be operational.

The collaboration between our Traffic Engineering and IT teams has not only helped restore services but also laid the foundation for a more robust and reliable system that will better serve Salem into the future.

Weather Information

We urge residents to use alternative sources for traffic information, like ODOT’s Tripcheck. We are grateful for the support from partner agencies that offer access to their traffic camera network, including portions of I-5 and Hwy 22 in Salem. This collaboration is crucial, especially when severe weather conditions impact our roadways.
