Scam Alert
Salem’s Municipal Court has been receiving questions about an apparent scam that has been hitting local text inboxes in recent weeks. The text claims to be from the Oregon Vehicle Administration (or in some cases Oregon DMV) and states that unpaid court fines and fees could result in loss of driving privileges, credit score impacts, and other dire consequences if they aren’t paid.
Here's what to do and not do, according to the Federal Trade Commission:
- Don’t respond to the message or click on any included links.
- Use caution when you get a text message you weren’t expecting, and it asks for money or personal information. Legitimate companies won’t ask for information about your account by text.
- If you think it might be real, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real – not the link in the text.
- To report an unwanted text, copy the message and forward it to 7726 (SPAM) or report it as spam through your messaging app to help your wireless provider spot and block similar messages.
