Teen Writers Invited to Enter Short Story Contest

April 15, 2019

Middle and high school-aged writers are invited to enter the annual Teen Short Story Contest. The deadline to enter by email or at the Teen Scene Ask Here Desk is 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three stories in each of two categories: Middle School (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12).

Celebrate Día! with Angel Ocasio/ ¡Celebramos juntos con Día!

Families are invited to a celebration of Día - Day of the Child/ Day of the Book with a bilingual performance of Comedy 4 the Kids with Angel Ocasio (in English and Spanish). 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, Loucks Auditorium. Doors open 15 minutes prior to the show, and seating is on a first come, first seated basis. 7th annual Library Talent Showcase features exciting, varied line-up

From stand-up comedy to Bollywood-style dance, an exciting lineup of local talent will be packed into one thrilling evening for Strut Your Stuff: A Talent Showcase at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 in Loucks Auditorium at Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. SE. A showcase of local talent for performers ages 18 and older, Strut Your Stuff is a non-competitive annual celebration of the skills and talents in our community. Admission is free on a first-come, first-seated basis. Doors open by 6:30 p.m.

Free English Classes now available at Salem Public Library

March 13, 2019

Free English classes are now available weekly from 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesdays in the Plaza Room at Salem Public Library. The classes are available through a partnership with Goodwill Industries and Salem Public Library. The class is open to all levels, beginning, intermediate, and advanced English students.

90-Second Newbery Film Festival comes to Salem Public Library

March 12, 2019

Everyone is invited to 90-Second Newbery Film Festival screening at 6 p.m. Friday, March 22 in Loucks Auditorium, The festival is a compilation of student-created short films that tell the stories of Newbery award-winning books in 90 seconds. Many local entries join national contest winners for a zany, hilarious screening hosted by authors James Kennedy (The Order of Odd-Fish) and Heidi Schultz (Hook’s Revenge; Giraffes Ruin Everything).

Results from Library Upgrade Design Open House

The first community Open House on the Salem Public Library renovation project took place February 19, 6-8 pm. Fifty attendees heard a presentation on options for improving or adding to the Library’s spaces and features, and shared their views on Library improvements.

Join the March into Non-fiction Reading Challenge!

February 12, 2019

Readers and listeners (ages 0 - 18) are invited to take the non-fiction reading challenge. Read books from a variety of non-fiction categories in March. In April, turn in your completed reading log in exchange for a new non-fiction book to keep. Register online or at the Youth Services or Teen Services Ask Here Desks.
